Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment creates responsibilities that continue after the first passport arrives. Before renewal, families need to review their presence records, oath documentation, personal details and any continuing investment conditions.
The most useful preparation starts with each person's citizenship registration date and passport expiry date. They serve different purposes, and a single family application does not mean every document expires together. Our Antigua and Barbuda citizenship overview explains the wider programme.
Start with the first passport's validity and the applicable stay rule
The CIU's passport guidance describes an initial five-year passport, with renewal considered subject to a total of five days spent in the country during the five years after citizenship is granted. Treat this published guidance as a starting point, not a guarantee that the same rule applies to every case throughout a changing regulatory period.
The CIU's citizenship information also warns that failure to meet the stay requirement may lead to deprivation of citizenship. Presence compliance deserves attention before passport expiry. It should not be left to the final renewal appointment.
Understand why five-day and thirty-day requirements must be distinguished
The ECCIRA Agreement Act 2025 contains a regional framework with a 30-day aggregate physical-presence requirement in the first five years and a separate individual minimum of five days in the first twelve months. It also addresses integration and family counting rules.
Enactment and application to a particular citizen are separate questions. The Act provides for commencement by a gazetted ministerial order. The Agreement contains entry-into-force and provisional-application provisions, while Article 49.6 addresses new and pending applications and transitional guidelines.
Before relying on either number, ask your licensed agent to obtain confirmation of the operative rule, relevant commencement or provisional-application notices, and how your application and grant dates are treated. Do not assume that the regional text automatically changes every existing citizen's obligations, or that the older website figure settles a newer case.
Keep evidence of actual visits for each family member
The CIU's published AB10 renewal form, version May 2020, asks for two types of presence evidence from entry and exit stamps, hotel receipts, boarding passes or property-management confirmation. Obtain the current checklist before submission.
Keep a simple travel log alongside those records: visitor's name, arrival and departure dates, passport used and supporting files. If parents and children travel on different dates, record their visits separately. A parent's booking does not, on its own, document a child's presence.
Ask how arrival and departure days are counted under the applicable instructions. Avoid booking exactly the minimum number of days before that calculation has been confirmed.
Complete and document the oath separately from travel
The CIU's NDF process guidance describes taking the oath or affirmation of allegiance on a first visit, or through an Antigua and Barbuda embassy, high commission or consular office.
These are arrangements for the oath; an overseas ceremony does not demonstrate a physical visit to Antigua and Barbuda. Keep the oath record with the citizenship certificate, and check that the CIU has the required copy. If the ceremony remains outstanding, establish the authorised location and procedure before combining it with a proposed trip.
Check children's forms, signatures and individual circumstances
The CIU's application forms page distinguishes passport Form L for applicants aged 16 and older from Form M for those under 16. The published AB10 instructions require a separate form for each person, including children, and parental signatures for minors.
Passport-form age bands do not establish an exemption from presence requirements. Confirm each child's position separately, especially where the child reaches an age threshold during the first passport period. Ask which parental consents or guardianship documents are required for the family's circumstances.
Review identity, certification and investment records
The older AB10 checklist includes birth and citizenship-registration certificates, a marriage certificate where relevant, address evidence, photographs and the existing passport for cancellation. It also requests investment-holding evidence for property and business routes. Use it to organise the file, then confirm current documents and fees through the licensed agent.
For document preparation, follow the CIU's certification guidance. It distinguishes a certified true copy from authentication of the certifier's authority, using an apostille for a Hague Convention jurisdiction or the relevant government validation elsewhere. Confirm the appropriate process for the document's country of origin and any translation requirements.
Resolve differences in names or dates before submitting the file. If an investment was transferred, restructured or sold, review the applicable holding obligation and supporting evidence before assuming the renewal requirements have been met.
Build a renewal timetable before arranging travel
The following is a preparation sequence, rather than an official processing timetable:
| Stage | Practical action |
|---|---|
| Initial review | Compare registration dates, passport expiries and each person's applicable obligations. |
| Before booking a visit | Confirm presence rules, counting methods, individual requirements and oath arrangements. |
| Before submission | Obtain the current checklist and quote; prepare certifications, forms and supporting records. |
| During renewal | Confirm passport surrender, cancellation, production and delivery arrangements before committing to another journey. |
Request a case-specific completion and delivery estimate. Leave room for document corrections and additional enquiries, and check destination passport-validity requirements independently when planning a trip.
