Dubai trade licence renewal starts with identifying the authority that issued your licence, its expiry date and any conditions attached to your business activity. A mainland company and a free zone company may have different application channels, documents and renewal charges.
Renewal also needs to fit around your premises agreement, regulatory approvals and immigration deadlines. Treating everything as one annual payment can leave important items unfinished.
When should you renew a Dubai trade licence?
For businesses covered by Dubai's mainland licensing framework, Article 8 of Law No. 13 of 2011 requires renewal during the last month before expiry. The law provides for a one-year licence term, with longer terms possible subject to approval. Its definition of a business excludes establishments licensed inside free zones, so this deadline should not be presented as a universal free zone rule.
As a practical planning measure, review your file six to eight weeks ahead. This preparation window is not a statutory deadline: it gives you time to resolve a lease issue, obtain an approval or arrange an authorised signatory before submitting within the relevant renewal window.
Does the same process apply to every Dubai company?
No. Start with the issuing authority shown on the existing licence.
| Licensing route | Renewal channel | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai mainland | Invest in Dubai or an authorised service channel | Activity details, premises requirements, approvals and the payment voucher. |
| DDA-licensed business | axs portal | The applicable commercial licence renewal requirements. |
| DMCC member company | DMCC Member Portal | Licence term, applicable prerequisites and the company's account status. |
These are examples, not an exhaustive list of Dubai free zones. For instance, Dubai Development Authority's renewal service uses axs and requires completion of the application, supporting documents and payment. A company registered elsewhere should follow its own authority's process.
Which documents should you prepare?
There is no single document checklist for every company. Prepare your existing licence details, the applicant's authority to act, relevant premises records and any approvals linked to the licensed activities. Then compare that file with the requirements for your specific entity.
DDA lists an external authority NOC where applicable. For certain branches of onshore UAE companies, it also lists evidence such as a certificate of continuity, good standing or current trade licence. A power of attorney may be needed when someone applies on the company's behalf.
The DMCC renewal guideline dated 23 December 2025 identifies prerequisites including a valid lease and, where applicable, insurance, a regulatory NOC, an Operational Fitness Certificate and parent-company good-standing evidence. It also specifies document validity conditions; checking only that a certificate exists may be insufficient.
For premises, confirm whether an Ejari certificate, tenancy agreement, title deed or another accepted arrangement is relevant. The Dubai Land Department's Ejari service deals with tenancy registration and renewal; it is a separate transaction from renewing a business licence.
How do you renew a Dubai trade licence online?
For an eligible mainland renewal, Invest in Dubai provides an online route and identifies service centres and SMS as other channels. DET's Al Wajeez business guide also describes sending the licence number to 6969 to receive a payment voucher.
- Access the appropriate official renewal service and identify your licence.
- Check company details and resolve any required amendments or approvals.
- Supply the documents requested for your application.
- Review the payment voucher, renewal period and included charges before paying.
- Confirm issuance and save the renewed licence with its new expiry date.
A fast payment route does not eliminate activity-specific conditions. For example, the RTA trade licence renewal NOC service addresses relevant commercial transport activities. Check whether your activity needs approval or qualifies for an applicable automatic renewal arrangement.
How much does trade licence renewal cost in Dubai?
There is no universal Dubai renewal price. Invest in Dubai states that the licence renewal fee depends on the business activity. DDA directs applicants to its applicable tariff. Compare quotations using an itemised breakdown rather than a headline package price.
| Budget item | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Licence and authority charges | Which licence, activities and renewal period does the voucher cover? |
| Premises | Are rent, workspace renewal and tenancy registration included or separate? |
| Approvals and supporting documents | Will any NOC, insurance or certification need renewing? |
| Immigration transactions | Are establishment card and residence permit renewals excluded? |
| Professional assistance | What service fee and applicable taxes are charged, and what work is included? |
A cheaper licence-only quotation may exclude items included in another provider's annual package. Request the same scope and renewal period from each provider before comparing totals.
Does licence renewal also renew visas and the establishment card?
No. GDRFA Dubai provides separate services for establishment card renewal and private-sector employee residence permit renewal. Completing a licence payment should not be treated as confirmation that either immigration transaction is complete.
Consider an illustrative business with a licence expiring on 31 August, an establishment card expiring on 15 September and an employee's residence permit expiring on 30 November. Those are three dates to track, even if one adviser coordinates all three applications.
Check work permits and Emirates IDs separately where relevant. Ask for the issued document or official completion confirmation for each requested service.
What if the licence is already overdue?
Contact the issuing authority to establish the account status, outstanding requirements and applicable charges. Do not assume that another company's grace period or penalty schedule applies to your entity.
DMCC's guideline requires renewal on or before expiry and states that late renewal brings account sanctions and penalties and may lead to licence termination. It also prohibits operating in or from the zone without a valid licence. Avoid treating payment alone as evidence that restrictions have been cleared: confirm the renewed licence has actually been issued.
What should you check before submitting?
Keep a separate renewal calendar and assign someone responsibility for each item:
- Confirm the licensing authority, expiry date and available renewal window.
- Check whether premises records, approvals or company details need updating.
- Verify document validity and the applicant's signing authority.
- Obtain a breakdown separating authority fees, premises, immigration work and service charges.
- Save the renewed licence and track immigration renewals independently.
