Global Structuring

Greece Golden Visa family members can obtain residence through a qualifying investor, but the relationship, age and supporting evidence must fit the legal category. Spouses or recognised civil partners, qualifying children and parents can be covered; each person still needs their own application.

For a family planning a move or a European base, the important questions extend beyond the investment price. Check who qualifies, what happens when a child turns 21 and how documents, appointments and renewal dates will be coordinated.

Which family members can join a Greece Golden Visa investor?

Article 95 of the Immigration Code, reproduced in Article 43 of Law 5162/2024, sets out the main family categories:

Family memberMain point to establish
Spouse or civil partnerA marriage or cohabitation agreement recognised for the Greek application.
Joint childrenUnmarried status and age below 21.
Children of either spouse or partnerUnmarried status, age below 21 and the legally assigned custody required by the provision.
Parents of the investor and spouse or partnerThe direct ascending relationship, supported by the relevant civil records.

Parents-in-law should prepare the full relationship chain: for example, the spouse's birth record and the couple's marriage record. A shared surname is not a substitute for that evidence.

There is also a specific provision for certain adult children lacking legal capacity, added in 2026 and explained below. Brothers, sisters and other relatives should not be assumed eligible simply because they belong to the same household.

What happens when a child turns 21?

The three-year transition is for existing qualifying family permit holders. Article 95 of Law 5038/2023 provides a separate three-year residence permit for children in the relevant family categories who reach 21, with the previous family-reunification permit forming the required basis.

This is different from allowing any 22- or 23-year-old to enter a new family application. A child who has never held the qualifying family permit cannot rely on the transition merely because they are under 24.

For example, a 20-year-old already holding the relevant permit should plan the transition before their birthday. An older sibling making a first application needs a separate eligibility assessment. Discuss the filing timetable and the residence options available after the three-year period rather than assuming indefinite renewal.

Can an adult child qualify regardless of age?

Yes, under a narrowly defined exception. Article 29 of Law 5275/2026, published on 6 February 2026, added adult third-country-national children of the investor, spouse or partner who lack legal capacity, live with the sponsor and are maintained by them.

The law requires formal evidence of the lack of legal capacity: a final Greek judgment, a foreign judgment recognised in Greece, or an equivalent document from the competent authority in the country of origin or habitual residence, duly authenticated and translated.

Financial dependency alone does not establish this exception, and a medical diagnosis should not be assumed to replace the specified legal evidence. Have the family circumstances and supporting decision assessed before relying on this route.

What documents should a family prepare?

Create an individual file for every applicant, with a shared index linking the family records.

File areaPreparation points
Identity and principal applicationPassports, the investor's application or permit details and the information requested for each applicant.
Family relationshipMarriage, civil partnership and birth records establishing the complete relationship chain.
Children from earlier relationshipsApplicable custody decisions and any consent or recognition documents needed for the case.
Adult-child exceptionThe qualifying legal-capacity decision or equivalent document, plus cohabitation and maintenance evidence.
Administrative requirementsRequired photographs, health-cover evidence, biometrics and payment records appropriate to the applicant.

Confirm the final checklist with the competent service. Check names, dates and transliterations across documents before translation; inconsistent records can require additional clarification.

The Greek Foreign Ministry's authentication guidance explains that foreign public documents must follow the applicable legalisation framework before official translation. Apostille requirements depend on the issuing country and document, with relevant treaty and EU exceptions. Arrange this in the correct order instead of assuming every certificate needs identical treatment.

Must the whole family enter Greece together?

Not necessarily. The Ministry's 25 October 2024 clarification distinguishes entering the country, submitting an application and collecting biometrics. Family members may accompany the investor or join later.

For the circumstances described in that clarification, minor children do not need to enter at the same time as the investor for their application to be filed. Children aged six and above must enter when required for biometric collection; children under six can receive their permits without entering for that purpose.

This does not waive entry rules or the remaining application requirements. Coordinate the travel plan with the filing arrangements and each person's appointment notice.

Does every family member need a separate investment?

Eligible relatives apply through the qualifying investor's family route rather than each making a separate qualifying investment. However, one investment does not mean one application or one total fee.

For an illustrative household comprising the investor, a spouse, two qualifying children and four parents, there are eight individual residence files to organise. Some civil records may establish relationships across several files, but passports, application details and applicable charges still need individual attention.

Request an itemised budget separating the investment, government charges by applicant category and age, health cover, legal work, legalisation, translation and travel. Confirm which items cover initial applications and which will recur at renewal.

Can family members work or travel elsewhere in Europe?

Residence, employment and travel are separate rights. The property-investor permit is not an employment route: Article 100, as replaced by Law 5100/2024, states that permits under that article do not establish access to work. Check the actual family or autonomous permit category before accepting employment.

A valid Greek residence permit can support short visits to other Schengen countries under the applicable rules, generally within the 90-days-in-180 limit. It does not give an unrestricted right to live or work throughout Europe. The Schengen Borders Code governs relevant entry conditions, including valid travel documents and residence permits.

Golden Visa family residence also does not automatically confer Greek citizenship.

What should families monitor before renewal?

Family permits linked to the investor normally expire with the sponsor's permit. Keep a calendar covering each card and any age-related transition, while checking that the investment and family basis continue to support the applications.

  • Review birthdays before starting an investment or delaying a child's application.
  • Keep relationship, custody and legal-capacity records organised and current where required.
  • Track changes in marriage, partnership, custody or the sponsor's residence status.
  • Confirm each applicant's appointment, charges and renewal requirements.
