Hungary Golden Visa family reunification allows eligible relatives of a guest investor residence permit holder to apply for residence in Hungary. Spouses and qualifying minor children are the main categories, while dependent parents and certain relatives with health-related needs require closer assessment. Each family member needs a separate application. Preparing the family file alongside the investment can help identify document and appointment issues before relocation plans become fixed.
Who can join a Hungary Golden Visa holder?
Section 71 of Hungary's Act XC of 2023 covers spouses and qualifying minor children, including adopted or foster children under the relevant custody conditions. The official family definition also recognises registered partners under Act XXIX of 2009.
Dependent parents of the investor or spouse may qualify. Siblings and relatives in the direct line may qualify where health conditions prevent them from supporting themselves. These categories need evidence of the particular relationship and dependency or health circumstances.
An adult child does not qualify simply because the investor pays their expenses. Review any possible health-related exception or an independent residence route. For a child approaching adulthood, obtain advice on eligibility timing before committing to a family application schedule.
Can the investor and family apply at the same time?
OIF's guest investor FAQ explains that family applications can proceed in parallel with the main applicant's residence permit application. The investor's entry visa alone does not establish the family's entitlement to reside for family reunification.
The Hungarian Embassy in Tehran's guest investor checklist likewise links family filing at the embassy to the investor having applied for residence in Hungary.
Prepare documents together, then coordinate actual submission with the competent authority. Keep evidence identifying the sponsor's application so the files can be connected. Parallel filing does not guarantee simultaneous decisions or matching travel dates.
Where should family members submit their applications?
Nationality and existing immigration status matter. A first-time applicant who needs a visa to enter Hungary will generally apply through the competent Hungarian mission abroad. Visa-exempt nationals may be able to apply during a lawful stay in Hungary, subject to the applicable conditions. The European Commission's Hungary family member guidance describes this distinction.
Do not assume that accompanying the investor on a short-stay visa permits an application inside Hungary. Confirm the filing location for every passport in the household. A family with different nationalities may need different submission arrangements.
What documents are needed for Hungary family reunification?
Use this Hungary family reunification documents checklist to organise the file. OIF's family reunification factsheet sets out the supporting categories; additional evidence depends on the applicant's circumstances.
| Document group | Examples to prepare | Check before submission |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and application | Passport, completed form, relevant appendix and photograph | Names and passport details agree throughout |
| Family relationship | Marriage, birth or adoption certificate; custody documents where relevant | The evidence establishes the claimed relationship |
| Support and accommodation | Bank or income evidence, maintenance undertaking and proof of Hungarian accommodation | The documents cover the actual family arrangement |
| Healthcare and onward travel | Evidence of healthcare cover or resources, and travel arrangements or funds | Coverage and funds relate to the applicant |
| Children and representation | Parental consent and, if using a representative, authority to act | The correct people sign in the required form |
The Enter Hungary document guide is useful when preparing an electronic file. Keep complete, readable copies and retain originals for the authority's checks.
How should translations and parental consent be prepared?
Check translation requirements before commissioning the work. The investor FAQ calls for authentic Hungarian translations by OFFI for foreign documents issued in languages other than English. This does not make an English-language document automatically sufficient for every family procedure. Ask the receiving mission about its requirements for civil-status documents, certification and any legalisation.
OFFI explains the difference between paper and electronic versions of its certified translations. Confirm the accepted format before ordering.
For a minor, prepare consent to residence in Hungary in the required evidential form, with Hungarian or English translation where required. A custody order, adoption record or evidence explaining an absent parent's authority may also be relevant. Resolve inconsistent names and transliterations across documents before submission.
What financial, housing and healthcare evidence is needed?
Budget for the family's living arrangements separately from the qualifying investment. Family applications involve evidence of resources, accommodation and healthcare. A fund subscription certificate does not explain who pays a child's living costs or where the household will stay.
Where the investor supports relatives, prepare a maintenance undertaking in the required form and supporting financial evidence. A useful file makes the relationship between the sponsor, the funds and the family member easy to follow.
Check who is named in accommodation documents and healthcare cover. Ask the receiving authority how to document a family lease, a dependent parent's care needs or an insurance policy with exclusions. Avoid relying on a generic bank balance copied from an unrelated application example.
Can family members work, and how long can permits last?
Section 22(2) gives holders of a family reunification permit linked to a guest investor employment rights in Hungary without the restrictions applying to some other permit categories. OIF confirms that changing to another residence purpose is unnecessary merely to take employment under this provision; employer reporting obligations still apply.
Under section 73, the linked family permit can be valid for up to 10 years, with extensions of up to 10 years where conditions are met. Its validity cannot exceed either the sponsor's permit or the family member's passport. This is a maximum, rather than a promise that every card will have the same expiry date.
How can a family avoid delays before filing?
Create a separate folder for each applicant and one shared folder for sponsor evidence. Record who needs a consular appointment, which certificates need translation and when passports expire. Include application charges, document preparation, insurance and travel in the family budget.
