Hungary Guest Investor Programme: Entry Visa vs Residence Permit

Understand the difference between Hungary’s guest investor visa and residence permit, with practical guidance on entry, investment evidence, deadlines and family applications.

Global Structuring

A guest investor visa and a Hungarian residence permit are two different documents. Receiving the visa does not mean that long-term residence has already been granted, and its validity period does not replace the deadlines for applying or proving your investment.

For anyone considering Hungary's Guest Investor Programme, the important task is to coordinate entry, the residence application and investment evidence. This guide explains that sequence; our Hungary residency overview covers the wider programme.

Understand what the guest investor visa allows

The official guest investor visa guidance describes a visa valid for up to six months. It supports entry and the subsequent residence process. Applications are normally made through a Hungarian consular officer abroad, subject to the rules on where you may apply.

The visa becomes invalid when the corresponding residence permit is issued. A residence permit is therefore a separate approval stage, rather than an automatic extension of the visa. Check the document you hold and the next action required before arranging travel.

Check whether you need the visa before travelling

Your nationality and current status affect the starting point. The immigration authority's investor FAQ distinguishes applicants entitled to enter Hungary without a visa from those who must first obtain a guest investor visa abroad.

An existing Hungarian residence permit does not by itself remove that requirement for a person whose nationality requires a visa. Eligible visa-exempt applicants may use the in-country route during lawful stay. Have the entry basis checked for your passport and circumstances rather than relying on another investor's experience.

Track the application and investment deadlines separately

Build your timetable around three distinct requirements:

  1. Residence application: within 30 days of the first relevant entry. The published guidance applies this to entry with a guest investor visa or on a visa-exempt basis. It separately addresses visa-exempt applicants already holding Hungarian residence permits.
  2. Investment completion: within three months of visa issuance where an undertaking to invest was made with the visa application.
  3. Investment proof: within three months of entering Hungary. The FAQ requires certification of the completed investment through Enter Hungary.

The visa's maximum six-month validity does not give you six months to complete every step. Entering later also does not restart a deadline measured from visa issuance. Record each triggering date and confirm the timetable before choosing appointments or investment payment dates.

Prepare the investment evidence and residence documents

The residence permit requirements specify the evidence needed for the qualifying investment. For the fund route, this includes certification of the qualifying EUR 250,000 holding and securities-account documentation showing the required blocking arrangement. The donation route requires confirmation from the qualifying institution.

Prepare accommodation evidence, your passport and photograph alongside the investment records. A lease, ownership document or other accepted accommodation record serves a different purpose from proof of a qualifying investment. Ask for a checklist that identifies who issues each document, whether certification is needed and when the evidence must be ready.

Plan in-person attendance and family applications

Online submission does not remove the attendance requirement. The investor residence guidance requires personal attendance to finalise the application and collect biometric data. Arrange this alongside the submission timetable.

Family members require their own assessment and residence applications. The family reunification rules cover spouses and qualifying minor children, with conditions on relationships and supporting evidence. Prepare the relevant civil records and check accommodation, maintenance and healthcare evidence for each applicant. Do not assume that the principal investor's visa automatically grants residence to the family.

Distinguish permit validity from renewal conditions

The investor FAQ gives a maximum residence-permit validity of ten years, with one extension of up to another ten years. The entry visa itself cannot be extended.

The FAQ also states that guest investor permit holders have no mandatory minimum length of stay in Hungary. This does not remove the investment conditions or renewal procedure. Extension applications must be made in Hungary through Enter Hungary while the permit remains valid, at least 30 days before expiry. For the fund route, the qualifying investment must be held when applying for extension.

Build one timetable before committing to the process

Start by confirming the correct entry route. Then align the visa decision, travel, residence application, investment completion, evidence submission and biometric appointment. Include separate preparation time for any family files.

Request a written schedule showing which dates are legal deadlines and which are estimates for document preparation or processing. A well-organised file can reduce avoidable gaps, while approval remains with the immigration authority.
