UAE Document Attestation: Marriage, Birth and Degree Certificates Explained

Understand the attestation route for overseas marriage, birth and degree certificates, including translation, academic recognition, fees and preparation checks.

Global Structuring

UAE document attestation helps establish that the signatures and seals on a document are authentic. It is often part of preparing overseas certificates for use in employment, family residence or other official procedures, but the correct route depends on where the document was issued and who will receive it.

Before paying a provider, identify the exact certificate, issuing country, receiving authority and purpose. A marriage certificate, a degree and a company resolution may follow different requirements, even when they are being prepared for the same relocation.

What does MoFA attestation actually confirm?

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation service confirms the authenticity of signatures and seals. It should not be confused with translating a document, certifying a copy or assessing a university qualification.

ProcessWhat it addresses
Document attestationAuthentication of the relevant signatures and seals.
Certified or legal translationA translation prepared and certified in the form required by the receiving authority.
Notarial certificationA particular act, such as witnessing a signature or certifying a copy, within the notary's authority.
Qualification recognitionThe separate assessment of a higher education qualification under the applicable recognition framework.

Ask which of these is required. Completing one does not automatically complete the others.

Which certificates might you need to attest?

Start with the checklist for the application you are making. Marriage records may establish a spouse's relationship, birth records may establish parentage, and degree certificates may support an employment or qualification assessment. The receiving authority decides what evidence is needed for your case.

The UAE government's preparing-to-work guidance identifies overseas degree attestation and explains that personal certificates and commercial records are among the documents MoFA handles.

Make a document inventory before requesting a quotation. Include the holder, issuer, country, language and intended use. If a name has changed since graduation or marriage, identify the supporting record that connects the different names rather than altering a certificate yourself.

What is the usual route for a foreign-issued document?

Begin with the issuing country, not the applicant's current location. The UAE government's guidance describes certification by the issuing country's foreign ministry followed by the relevant UAE embassy or consulate. The precise preceding steps vary with the document and national system.

  1. Confirm whether the original certificate or a particular certified copy is required.
  2. Complete any required verification, notarial certification and foreign-office legalisation in the issuing country.
  3. Follow the responsible UAE mission's attestation instructions.
  4. Confirm the required UAE MoFA stage and whether it has already been included in the service completed through the mission.
  5. Submit the completed document in the form requested by the receiving authority.

Digital submission does not necessarily remove the need to present an original. Check the service scope and collection instructions before sending documents or paying for an additional attestation.

Is an apostille enough for use in the UAE?

Do not assume so. The Hague Apostille Convention applies within its defined scope between contracting states. An apostille is not a universal guarantee that every destination's requirements have been completed.

For a practical example, UK legalisation guidance explains that the Legalisation Office checks relevant signatures, stamps or seals and attaches an apostille. The UAE Embassy in London's instructions then require the appropriate foreign-office legalisation before embassy attestation.

A UK-issued marriage certificate carrying an apostille should therefore not be treated as having automatically completed the UAE mission process. Check the instructions for the actual issuing country; another family's experience with a different country may not describe your route.

When is translation required?

MoFA's published requirements allow documents in Arabic or English, or accompanied by the required legally certified translation. The authority receiving the document may have additional language or format requirements. Acceptance for MoFA attestation does not settle what a court, immigration service or professional regulator will require.

Confirm the translation sequence before ordering it. Ask whether stamps, legalisation pages and attachments must also be translated and whether the translator needs particular accreditation.

Compare names, dates and document numbers against the passport and application form. For example, a marriage certificate using a former surname may need supporting name-change evidence; a translation should not silently change the underlying record to make the names match.

Does degree attestation replace academic recognition?

Degree attestation and qualification recognition are separate checks. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research's 28 April 2025 announcement explains the recognition framework under Ministerial Resolution 34/2025, including qualification authenticity and the awarding institution's legal establishment, licensing and accreditation.

An attested certificate should not be represented as automatic recognition of the degree, admission to a regulated profession or approval for a particular visa category. Ask the employer, regulator or application authority which additional assessment is relevant.

Check whether a transcript is required as well as the graduation certificate. Treat each requested record as a separate item in the preparation file rather than assuming that attesting the degree covers every academic document.

How much does attestation cost and how long does it take?

MoFA's published FAQs list AED 150 for individual-affairs document attestation. They also explain that educational certificates and transcripts are treated as separate documents.

For illustration, if three personal documents each require one AED 150 MoFA attestation, that fee component totals AED 450. It is not an all-inclusive quotation: issuing-country charges, UAE mission fees, notarial work, translation, delivery and provider fees may be additional. Confirm any combined-service charges before paying again for a stage already completed.

Request a timeline for the complete chain, not just one authority's processing stage. Issuing-country verification, signature queries, missing records and courier journeys can affect completion. An expedited delivery option does not itself accelerate every upstream authority.

What commonly causes rejection or extra work?

Check the document before starting the attestation chain. MoFA requires the relevant prior certifications and states that documents must not be laminated. Confirm the accepted format for a replacement or an electronically issued record before submitting it.

  • Check that the receiving authority wants this exact certificate and version.
  • Verify the issuing country's required sequence and the responsible UAE mission.
  • Resolve inconsistent names or dates with appropriate supporting records.
  • Confirm original-document, translation and attachment requirements.
  • Request an itemised quotation showing each document and attestation stage.
  • Keep receipts, reference numbers and the completed attestation for the final application.
