UAE Golden Visa Family Sponsorship: Spouse, Children and Parents Explained

Plan Golden Visa residence for your spouse, children and parents with a practical guide to relationship documents, medical checks, insurance and family costs.

Global Structuring

UAE Golden Visa holders can apply to sponsor their spouse, children and parents. Each family member still needs an individual application, supporting evidence and the relevant approval. The principal applicant's residence card does not automatically create residence permits for everyone in the household.

A useful family plan starts with three details: who will apply, whether they are already in the UAE and which documents establish the relationship. This guide explains the main checks to make alongside an application for the UAE Golden Visa.

Who can a UAE Golden Visa holder sponsor?

The Golden Residence annex to Cabinet Resolution No. 65 of 2022 provides for renewable ten-year residence permits for the holder's spouse, children regardless of age, and parents. Eligibility remains subject to the applicable conditions and the authority's approval.

Identify the correct family route before gathering documents. A Golden Visa dependent application and an ordinary employment-sponsored family visa are different categories. Do not copy the age limits, permit duration or quoted costs from one into the other.

Keep a household list showing each person's relationship, passport expiry, existing residence status and intended relocation date. Flag stepchildren, custody arrangements or changes in marital status at the beginning, since these circumstances need individual review.

What should you check for adult children and parents?

The UAE Cabinet's April 2022 announcement expressly distinguishes Golden Residence by allowing sponsorship of children regardless of age. An adult child's age alone should therefore not be assessed using the ordinary family-visa rule for sons under 25.

No age limit does not mean no documentary conditions. Confirm how the relevant authority assesses an adult child's marital status and relationship evidence. Explain the actual circumstances rather than assuming that every adult child qualifies automatically.

For parents, prepare proof of the relationship and clarify whether dependency evidence is needed for the selected service. Dubai's property-investor Golden Visa service, for example, lists a consular dependency certificate among its parent-residence documents. Do not assume that a parent-in-law is covered simply because a parent is eligible.

Which family sponsorship documents should you prepare?

Use this as a preparation list, then obtain the checklist for the particular authority and application category. The documents needed can differ between a new arrival, a resident changing sponsorship and a renewal.

ApplicantDocuments to organisePoint to resolve early
SpousePassport, photograph and certified marriage certificateName differences or a later change of name
ChildPassport, photograph and certified birth certificateCustody, parental consent and any adult-child declarations
ParentPassport, photograph and evidence linking the parent to the sponsorAny required consular or dependency certificate
SponsorPassport, Emirates ID and Golden Residence detailsCorrect immigration record and sponsorship file

Add each applicant's existing UAE visa or residence information where applicable. Check that names, dates of birth and passport numbers agree across the file. Resolve inconsistencies before paying for translations or submitting applications; a readable scan cannot correct an underlying discrepancy.

Do marriage and birth certificates need attestation?

Translation and attestation perform different jobs. Translation makes a document readable in the required language; attestation confirms the relevant seal and signature. One should not be treated as a substitute for the other.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' official service guide accepts an original in Arabic or English, or a legal translation, and describes its attestation channels. For overseas certificates, establish the required issuing-country and UAE mission steps before arranging the UAE stage.

Make a document tracker with columns for the original, translation, completed certifications and outstanding action. If a certificate has been reissued or a surname changed after marriage, keep the connecting evidence together. Confirm the destination authority's language requirements before commissioning a translation.

How does the family residence application proceed?

First confirm the sponsor's Golden Residence record and the correct channel: GDRFA for Dubai applications or ICP for the relevant federal service. Establish whether an entry permit, a change of status or a transfer from existing sponsorship is needed before choosing the application sequence.

Next, submit the family applications with the relationship documents and complete the required health and identity procedures. The UAE Government's family-residence guidance states that sponsored family members aged 18 and above must pass a medical fitness examination at an approved centre.

Keep medical screening separate from health insurance: they answer different requirements. Coordinate any Emirates ID appointments with the residence process, and track each person's application individually. Avoid cancelling an existing permit before confirming the transition arrangements and deadlines.

How much should you budget for Golden Visa dependants?

Build the budget per applicant, rather than multiplying a headline visa price. Request an itemised quotation that separates government charges from service-provider fees and identifies what is paid once for the sponsorship file.

  • Entry or status-change charges, where applicable.
  • Residence application and Emirates ID charges.
  • Medical fitness examinations for the relevant applicants.
  • Health insurance for each family member.
  • Translation, document attestation, courier and consular costs.
  • Optional assistance or faster service, if available.

For example, a spouse, a 22-year-old child and a 12-year-old child mean three dependent applications, with two adults falling within the medical-screening rule. Document and insurance costs still need separate quotes. Adding a parent changes the document work and insurance assessment again. This is a planning example, not a fee calculation or approval prediction.

Can a sponsored spouse or adult child work?

Residence sponsorship and permission to take a job should be checked separately. For employers registered with MoHRE, Article 6 of Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022 recognises work permits for family-sponsored residents and for Golden Visa holders.

The employer should establish which permit matches the person's actual status before employment begins. A regulated profession may also require professional licensing. Free-zone employment should be checked with its competent authority. Include a spouse's job plans in the relocation discussion, rather than assuming that the family residence application completes the employment process.

What should your family track after approval?

The Golden Residence rules require financial support and valid health insurance for the holder and family. Renewal requires the relevant approvals and continued fulfilment of the applicable conditions. The rules also protect sponsored family members' remaining permitted stay if the principal holder dies; this does not promise indefinite residence.

Keep a shared calendar for passports, residence permits, Emirates IDs and insurance. Save approval notices and report relevant changes through the appropriate channel. Capitals28 can help organise the family plan and coordinate the supporting steps through its UAE PRO services, with the final requirements confirmed for each applicant.
